Discover Academic Service Learning

Our Mission

As UMKC’s Academic Service-Learning support office, Students in the City furthers the progress of urban core revitalization by creating experiential education opportunities for UMKC students.

What We Do

One of the most significant ways a university engages with communities is by enabling its students to develop civic leadership skills and expand their class-based learning through meaningful public service in the community.

Students in the City…

  • Facilitates connections between community organizations and UMKC faculty, staff and students;

  • Provides support to community-based organizations hosting Academic Service-Learning projects;

  • Provides support for faculty implementing a service-learning project in a class

  • Hosts forums for community members and UMKC faculty, staff and students to learn about best practices in the field of Academic Service-Learning.

Why Academic Service-Learning?

Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) brings the city into the classroom. Through a project assignment that addresses community needs, students learn from community members and develop leadership skills while practicing theoretical knowledge gained in class. Students in the City is at the heart of UMKC’s mission to be an essential community partner and resource. Everyone benefits from Academic Service-Learning. Community organizations benefit from student talent and faculty expertise, and students deepen their learning through serving the city. Academic Service-Learning is one way students, faculty and community members participate together in projects that are progressive, transformative and rooted in the social and civic ideals fundamental to both nonprofit and university missions. AS-L provides significant benefits for student learning, community needs, faculty satisfaction and professional development. Students, faculty and community members are involved in service-learning for myriad reasons. Among the most common motivators are: commitment to meaningful learning for students, professional development and meeting community needs --- with all partners united in a desire to promote actions for the common good.
